The individual learning plan helps the student:

So it is important to understand what the student has to do to complete My Success Platinum. For that reason, this tutorial includes overviews of the required components of the individual learning plan: My Info, My Goal, My Plan, and My Progress.

Academic Advising Guide

I. Philosophy of Academic Advising

TCC has a progressive advising model which is a system of shared responsibility between students and the College. The College community works with students to develop educational and career plans and provides opportunities for refining academic and life skills. Many students enter the institution with questions related to course selection and immediate needs, but adviser/student interactions can evolve into life and career planning and eventually lead students toward managing the advising process in a more self-directed approach.

II. The Goals of Advising

1. Assist students in developing educational and career plans consistent with life goals.
2. Provide students with accurate information about academic progression and degree requirements.
3. Assist students in understanding academic policies and procedures.
4. Help students access campus resources to promote academic success.
5. Enhance student retention and success through developing personal interactions with faculty and staff.

III. Student Responsibility and Expectations

Students are expected to take an active role in their education and in the advising process by doing the following:
1. Explore educational and career interests using available campus resources (e.g., My Success Platinum, Career Services, Enrollment Services and Student Success, FACTS.org).
2. Complete My Success Platinum on TCC Passport prior to meeting with an adviser.

IV. Faculty Adviser Responsibility and Expectations

The role of the faculty adviser is to help students:
1. Refine their academic plan based on educational and career interests.
2. Connect to appropriate campus resources for help in achieving goals.
3. Answer questions and help resolve issues that may hinder successes at TCC.
4. Facilitate and encourage independence in the advising process.

Some common topics of discussion in an advising session might include:

1. Reviewing curriculum and proposed courses for the upcoming terms.
2. Explaining the requirements for an intended major.
3. Reviewing the individual learning plan.
4. Recommending courses.
5. Providing tips on university transfer.
6. Assisting the student in connecting to campus resources.

For a comprehensive explanation of TCC's advising goals, policies, functions, processes, and resources, see the Advising Services website.

Referral Guide

We are not expecting faculty to serve in the role of a counselor, so you may suggest a student visit one of the Student Success Advisers for personal and/or social issues. The Advising Center can also provide advising support for students who have earned less than 18 college credits.
