OTHER COLON RULES

II. Use a colon as a separator in the following common situations:

A. Use a colon after the salutation in a formal or business letter.

— Dear Sir:                                

— Dear Senator Graham:

B. Use a colon between the hour and minute figures when writing times of the day.

— 9:30 AM                            

— 10:00 last night

C. Use a colon between the chapter and verse numbers in a reference from the Bible.

— Matthew 3:10 

— Psalm 84:2

D. Use a colon between the title and subtitle of a book or other work of art.
